CHAPTER FOUR

“The fires have burned over one hundred thousand acres so far and destroyed thirty homes along the way. Twice the fire teams thought they’d been able to get a handle on the blaze, only to have the winds blow up and turn the embers back into flames.” The news anchor stared out of the TV screen with a serious expression on his face. “The forecast calls for storms with heavy rain most of next week. We can only hope those predictions come true, or there could be more catastrophic destruction before the fires are put out.”

Aubrey wanted to turn the TV off then pitch the remote at the wall, but he restrained himself. His mom liked to watch the news before Jeopardy! and he didn’t want to break up her routine. A sigh escaped him as he stood, bringing his mom’s attention to him.

“Are you all right, honey?” She took his hand in hers to keep him from walking past her. “I’m sorry about your house. Thank goodness you have insurance on it and can rebuild.”

“It’s not that, Mom,” Aubrey told her. “I mean, yeah, I’m upset about the house, but I wasn’t that attached to it yet. Not like Mrs. Mason was. I’ll rebuild it and then it’ll be mine in every sense of the word. I’m just worried about Darragh and the other firefighters. They haven’t caught a break yet. I know they really haven’t been able to rest as much as they should be.”

She nodded. “I understand. There’s been no let up with these fires and even with all the help they’ve called in from across the country, it’s still taking up all their time. I’m praying for the weather to change.”

“Thanks, Mom.” He squeezed her fingers then let go to bend and pick up the kitten that frolicked around his feet. “I have to go feed Ten then I’ll check on Mrs. Mason.”

“Good idea. I think I’ll make some popcorn to snack on after Jeopardy!’s over with. We can watch a movie.” She rubbed her knuckle under Ten’s chin, smiling as he purred and tried to nibble on her finger.

After feeding Ten, Aubrey cleaned him up before setting Ten down to wander around. He wasn’t worried about the kitten getting into trouble. Mrs. Mason’s two Westies, Wiggles and Snowflake, kept a close eye on the little guy and would bark up a storm if he went some place he shouldn’t.

Aubrey wandered down the hallway to the second guest room where Mrs. Mason had been staying. He knocked on the door, waiting to hear her voice before he entered.

“Come in,” she called.

He found her sitting in her favorite rocking chair, staring out the window while holding a photo album on her lap. She glanced over and smiled as he approached her.

“How are you holding up, Mrs. M?” He sat on the bench at the foot of her bed.

“I’m doing quite well, son. Just traveling through memories.” Mrs. M smoothed her hand over the cover of the album.
